The Shamrock Scurry, one of Tallahassee’s oldest races, is back at Killearn United Methodist Church, where it all started in 1981. The Five-Kilometer and One Mile Fun Run/Walk will be held at Killearn on March 10, 2012. It typically occurs on a weekend near St. Patrick’s Day. The original course, which many in the running community remember as “good but tough” will be followed for most of the original course, and features the famed “Scurry Hill” around mile 2. The course will begin on Shamrock and will feature a scenic route of residential areas and golf course.
This event, including a popular Pancake Breakfast afterward, was put on by KUMC for about 20 years, with all proceeds going to local charities and youth rehabilitation programs. It became one of the most popular 5K races in Tallahassee, with as many as 600 regional runners participating some years. The Scurry was known for providing prompt, accurate and complete race results.
More recently it was held in various locations for about 5 years to successfully raise funds for The Children of Ireland Group. The race had no home in 2009 and it was decided that Killearn would like to resume leadership when we were looking for a way to raise money for Missions, while also promoting good health for our congregation and community. KUMC has added run/walk groups, Pilates and Senior exercise classes in an effort to encourage our members to have a healthy heart, soul, mind and body.
The sponsorship form for the 2012 race has been updated and can be accessed by selecting the Sponsorship Information button above.
