KUMC’s adult ministries continue to plan events that provide our members opportunities to reach out into the Tallahassee community and share the love of Christ. In the past, we’ve offered ballroom dancing, pilates, art, sittercize, knitting, quilting and canasta classes that provide fellowship to our members and others they invite to participate. Earlier this year, the Shamrock Scurry attracted more than 800 participants from our community.
Recently, we offered two events that provided our members more opportunities to include their friends, neighbors and co-workers.
Family Safety & Self Defense Event
On July 29, Master Chad Wilbur from the ATA Martial Arts Fitness Academy led a discussion and demonstration about personal and family safety. More than 40 of our members, their friends and others from the Tallahassee community participated in this event. Several families attended with their children.
During the event, we learned how to ward off intruders into our homes and ways to escape, helpful tips for our children when they get “lost in a crowd,” and ways to avoid other dangerous situations. We also learned how to disable perpetrators through various self defense actions. Finally, several of the class participants were able to break boards with their hands and feet!
Men’s Golf Event
Planned and organized by Fred Staubitz, 22 men came together for fellowship and golf at the Killearn Golf and Country Club on July 31. Starting at 9:30 a.m., the men teed off in foursomes that included longtime and new KUMC members, their neighbors and co-workers.
Although the heat index surged well past 100 degrees, most of the men “survived” all 18 holes. Since the final group to tee off included only three men, they were delighted to welcome “walk on” Bobby Bowden to join them!
We’ll plan other golf events, hopefully when the weather cools a bit.
You can view photos of both of these events in the glass case on the wall on the courtyard side of the Wesley building.
KUMC has a very large and lovely campus. For various reasons, several of our very dedicated volunteers are no longer able to provide the many hours of service necessary to maintain the beauty of our campus. The weeds are taking over!
Therefore, in conjunction with our Trustees Committee, our Assimilation Committee is pleased to sponsor KUMC’s first Adopt-a-Flower-Bed Program starting Oct.1, 2010. Through this volunteer effort, we are hoping to improve the appearance of our campus for our members and guests.
The Assimilation Committee has adopted the prayer garden in the courtyard behind the sanctuary. KUMC’s youth ministry has adopted the prayer garden opposite the entrance to the youth building. We’ll need at least 11 more groups or individuals to volunteer for the maintenance of other flower beds around campus (see campus map).
The committees request that you or your group agree to adopt a bed for a year, through Sept. 30, 2011. When a group agrees to adopt a bed, a contact person for the group must be designated for coordination purposes.
Our trustees will provide the plants, flowers, mulch, fertilizer, etc. to improve and maintain the beds. Donations, of course, are always accepted! Individuals and groups adopting beds will need to provide their own tools. Most of our beds are watered by our irrigation system. Hoses and sprinklers will be provided for the other beds.
Locations:
#1 Church Sign
#2 Front of Sanctuary
#3 Sanctuary (grass parking lot side)
#4 Sanctuary (paved parking lot side)
#5 Asbury (adjacent to sidewalk)
#6 Asbury (both sides of back door)
#7 Asbury (nearest the back drive)
#8 Epworth (both sides of courtyard entrance)
#9 Epworth (both sides of side entrance)
#10 Wesley (paved parking lot side)
#11 Wesley (rear)
Expectations:
Adopt a bed for one year
Provide one contact person for each group
Weeding and flower deheading (at least weekly)
Mulching (as needed and identified by coordinator)
Planting (as requested by coordinator)
Litter and/or trash removal (i.e. limbs, pine cones, etc.)
Notify coordinator of the need for replacement plants, etc.
So, pick up a brochure from one of the racks around campus. The brochure includes a campus map and identifies the flower beds that are available for adoption. Then, be one of the first groups to adopt a flower bed at KUMC!
Because of a small response to the Stephen Ministry Training, we are delaying the start of our weekly training until October. We are continuing to look for people who can listen, care, pray, support and encourage. The training provides all the tools you need to “be there” for someone who hurts. We have 26 active and faithful Stephen Ministers who are caring for our members and those in our community. Will you join our team and become part of a very active caring ministry? Please contact Susan Moreton at 893-1116 or smoreton@kumconline.org for more information.

Ladies: What does it mean to you to worship God? What does God’s Word have to say to us about what it means to Him?
When Jesus met the woman at the well, she tried to engage him in a debate about the best time, place and style for worship. Jesus addressed her external concerns when he said to her “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks. God is spirit and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.” John 4: 23-24 (our scripture for the retreat).
How do I worship in Spirit and Truth? How does the “Heart of Worship apply to my life?
Please join your sisters in Christ for the annual KUMC Women’s Retreat Oct. 29-31, 2010 for fellowship and discovery of the excitement of worship in a deep and personal way. Learn what it means to have a heart of worship and join us in Norman Park, Ga. beginning Friday evening and ending Sunday morning after communion.
We are very fortunate to have Dr. Kandace Brooks, Adjunct Professor of Worship at Asbury Theological Seminary in Orlando as our speaker. And Dawn Salmons, Worship leader for Asbury Theological Seminary’s Orlando campus will lead us in praise and worship. There will be healthful and stimulating breakout sessions, games that will help us to connect, time for rest and reflection, and a prayer room and prayer partners for personal prayer needs.
The cost is $150 per person, which may be made in three payments. You may sign up at the table in the courtyard through September, online at www.kumconline.org, or by calling Peggy Fox at the KUMC office at 893-1116.
