Southeastern Jurisdiction Association of Older Adults

Information about the next Festival of Wisdom and Grace, held each year in late July at Lake Junaluksa, can be found by following the links at http://www.lakejunaluska.com/. We encourage you to plan now – get a vanload together to attend the 2013 conference July 29th – August 1st, "The Times, They Are a-Changing!" The event includes powerful worship with music led by the Junaluska Singers, a morning plenary session led by author Missy Buchanan, and workshops with leaders including Dr. Richard Gentzler, Jane Marie Thibault, and the director of the Rosalyn Carter Institute for Caregiving.  2013 is Lake Junaluska's 100th anniversary, so the entertainment for the Festival of Wisdom and Grace will be a sneak preview of the drama written for the official celebration.  Lots of good fellowship, networking, and relaxing in the beautiful setting complete a soul-filling retreat!  The Festival of Wisdom and Grace is designed for those who are beyond the age of 50, as well as for persons working with those folks in their congregations. Take advantage of early-bird registration before June 1st!

Ageist?

Are you an ageist (someone who holds negative stereotypical ideas about older people)?  Take the quiz to find out!  It’s available on the Florida United Methodist web site: www.flumc2.org (click on Ministries then Beyond 50 Ministries).  The quiz is available at the bottom of the page.

Department of Elder Affairs Survey

The Census Bureau projects that by 2030, one-fifth of the population of Florida will be 60 or older.  At the same time, Americans are living longer; life expectancy is projected to rise to 90 years of age by 2030. As a result, the numbers and the needs of Florida seniors will increase exponentially.

A recent AARP survey indicated that 92% of those who responded want to remain in their own home as they age. The Florida Department of Elder Affairs and Graceful Solutions for Aging seek to gauge how the citizens of Florida are preparing their homes and communities to successfully age in place.

To that end, the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and Graceful Solutions for Aging ask for your assistance in identifying consumer views of critical senior needs and preferences for aging in place. You can help us greatly by completing this survey.
